Before the country's elections, the Modi administration in India moves quickly to regulate AI.

The Indian government has instructed tech companies to get its approval before releasing new tools, as parties use AI manipulation. Some claim that this could restrict free expression and innovation.

Before making available for public use "unreliable" or "under-tested" generative AI models or tools, tech companies are asked by the Indian government to explicitly seek its approval. As the nation prepares for a national election, it has also issued a warning to businesses, stating that their AI products should not produce replies that “threaten the integrity of the electoral process”.

After telling Parliament in April 2023 that it was not looking to draft any legislation to control AI, the Indian government has reverted to its previous posture of taking a hands-off approach.
