"Horrible tragedy": A Sri Lankan family's horrific murder shocked Canada.

A rare mass murder in Ottawa claimed the lives of two adults and four children. An acquaintance, 19, was taken into custody.

The mass murder of an Ottawa family who had just relocated from Sri Lanka has been denounced by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who described it as an act of "terrible violence."

Trudeau made his remarks on Thursday just hours after a family and a friend were slain in what appeared to be a late-night stabbing in the Barrhaven neighbourhood of Ottawa.

A 35-year-old mother and her four children—ages seven, four, two, and two months—are among the victims. There was also a 40-year-old family acquaintance who died.

In contrast to its southern neighbor, the United States, Canada rarely experiences mass casualty attacks, hence the incident has had a widespread impact there. In 2023, there were just 14 homicides in the one million-person metropolis of Ottawa. There were just fifteen that year.

Trudeau said to reporters, "Obviously, our first reactions are ones of shock and horror at this terrible violence."

As Canadians always do, we anticipate that the community will come together to assist friends and relatives. We also anticipate that the relevant police will be handling the task and keeping the rest of us updated on this horrible incident.

Although police reported that 19-year-old Febrio De-Zoysa, a student from Sri Lanka, had been taken into custody and charged with six charges of first-degree murder and one act of attempted murder, the motive for the crime was not immediately apparent.

De-Zoysa, according to the police, was an acquaintance who was visiting the family but had no prior history with the law.

"Unjust conduct,"

The family was discovered inside a property after officers responded to an emergency call just before 11 p.m. local time on Wednesday (02:00 GMT on Thursday), according to Ottawa police chief Eric Stubbs at a televised news conference.

The 35-year-old mother's husband was hurt in the attack, but he lived and was sent to a hospital where his condition was stable. De-Zoysa was taken into custody right away.

Among its little over 38 million inhabitants, Canada is a comparatively murderous country. But there were two notable attacks in 2022. That December, in a Toronto suburb, a man opened fire on five people before being shot and killed by police.

A few months earlier, in September, a guy in Saskatchewan's western region similarly fatally stabbed eleven people. Shortly after his arrest, he overdosed on cocaine and died.

Compared to the 331 million people that live in the US, this kind of attack is significantly less common. Northeastern University's mass killing database shows that there were 42 mass killings in 2023, which are occurrences in which four or more victims are killed.
